28 elephants from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu were tested for COVID-19 on Tuesday. Samples of 26 adults and 2 calves from Theppakadu camp have been sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute at Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
This is done as a precautionary measure after nine lions tested positive for COVID-19, and a lioness succumbed to the virus on June 3 at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park or Vandalur Zoo outside Chennai.

Dr K Rajesh Kumar, Forest Veterinarian of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, explained that most of the elephants cooperated. Swabs were collected from the trunk and rectum of the elephants while they were persuaded to lie down. This is a screening process and none of them are suspected of having the virus. He said that during testing, he did not need to mislead the elephants, which would have put a lot of pressure on the animal.
